The House of the Seven Gables…a “review”

Big Words – This novel is filled with them.  I thought that I was possessed with a great vocabulary...whilst reading this book, I discovered that this was not the case.

Sorry Nathaniel Hawthorne, I do not recommend this book.  This book was hard.  The ghosts that were promised barely made an appearance. It was not dark or page turning.  It was just hard.

I decided that instead of giving a synopsis, I would just list ten of the thousands of words in this book that I did not know and their definitions.  Enjoy – now you know them too!

Punctilious – showing great attention to detail or correct behavior

Tophet – a term for hell

Aeolus – in Greek mythology, Aeolus, the son of Hippotes, was the ruler of the winds encountered by Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey.

Abstruse – difficult to understand (HA!) ; obscure

Augury – a sign of what will happen in the future; an omen

Contumaciously – stubbornly or willfully disobedient to authority

Pertinacious – holding firmly to an opinion or course of action

Vitiated – spoiled or impaired the quality of

Indefatigably – persisting tirelessly

Benignity – kindness or tolerance towards others
