The best Independent Bookstores in Ventura County, CA

I love Ventura County. Practically perfect weather almost 365 days of the year - ocean views, huge mountains - famous spas - cute little beach towns and communities of artists. The perfect place to begin searching for and exploring the best California independent booksellers.

California is home - so this is where I will logically begin!

Bart’s Books, Ojai, CA

Bart’s Books claims to be the World’s Largest Outdoor Bookstore. In 1964, Ventura Co resident, Richard Bartinsdale wanted to share his books with neighbors so he built some shelves along the sidewalk for passersby. This is a magical place, filled with more that 125,000 titles. As unique as the beautiful “village” of Ojai where it finds its home. 302 W. Matilija St., Ojai, CA.

Timbre Books, Ventura, CA

Owners Megan & Kyle Murai have curated the loveliest collection of books located at 1910 E. Main Street in Ventura, CA. What a beautiful bookshop. I had to stop myself! The store also hosts events and offers book subscriptions.

Calico Cat Bookshop, Ventura, CA

Located in the heart of old town Ventura at 495 E. Main Street, this is one of my all time favorite used/rare book stores. I have been coming here for 20 years and always find some treasure to add to my library. This is the type of dusty old shop where the books are piled high in topsy turvy precarious piles. I highly recommend that you pay this shop a visit the next time you are in Ventura.

Mrs. Figs Bookworm, your village bookstore…beloved by Camarillo locals, this was such a fantastic little discovery for me. There is a great selection of children’s books and a very carefully curated selection of fiction located in a lively shopping center in Camarillo Village. 93 East Daily Drive, Camarillo.
